Google Inc. announced recently that it has acquired San Diego-based Nik Software Inc. A spokesman for Google declined to give financial terms of the deal, or the number of employees affected by the deal. The New York Times reported that Nik has more than 100 employees.

Nik, a 17-year-old company, produces photo editing software. One of its most popular products is called Snapspeed.

Many technology media outlets interpreted Google’s move as an attempt to boost its Google Plus social networking site, countering rival Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram.
