Pleasanton-based Safeway Inc. has scheduled a March 29 opening for a Vons supermarket serving San Diego’s Mission Hills and Hillcrest neighborhoods.

A company statement March 23 said the 58,000-square-foot store was under construction for 11 months at 515 W. Washington St. The store replaces a 12,000-square-foot store that Safeway had operated at that location since 1960.

Officials said the new “state-of-the-art” store allows the company to carry more products and expand services. It includes full-service deli, bakery, meat and seafood departments, along with expanded produce, beer and wine offerings.

The location features a Starbucks with interior seating and Wi-Fi access, and a pharmacy with enclosed waiting area. There is garage parking with multiple access points, elevators, escalators and cart movers.

The store has 120 employees, including 70 new hires. Safeway operates 57 Vons stores in San Diego County.
