BeyondTrust, a Carlsbad-based network security provider, said it acquired New York-based Blackbird Group, a Windows Active Directory systems management firm for an undisclosed price.

BeyondTrust said it will leverage the Blackbird product line to drive added context and awareness around Active Directory and infrastructure components. The business focuses on giving companies more controls over their data and IT systems by limiting access to internal users.

The acquisition follows an earlier purchase this year of eEye Digital Security. The business is headed up by longtime software veteran John Mutch, the former CEO at both HNC Software and Peregrine Systems, where he helped to arrange the sale of that failed business to Hewlett-Packard Co. following its bankruptcy reorganization.

The company said it is the only security solution vendor providing context aware security intelligence, giving customers the controls necessary to reduce their IT risks, while simplifying their compliance reporting.

Among its customers, BeyondTrust said it counts half of the 30 companies listed on the Dow Jones industrial average, eight of the world’s 10 largest banks, eight of the world’s 10 largest aerospace and defense companies, and seven of the 10 largest U.S. pharmaceutical companies, as well as many top universities.
