Palomar Technologies, a Carlsbad maker of microelectronics and opto-electronic packaging systems, was named the 2012 Exporter of the Year by the San Diego North Economic Development Council at its annual business luncheon.

A former subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft, Palomar was nominated for the award by the World Trade Center San Diego, which said the firm stood out because of its success in developing export markets for products in more than 30 countries in the past five years.

Palomar’s automated microelectronic packaging equipment supports the needs of thousands of organizations in the world, and serves the telecommunications, medical, defense, aerospace and commercial high technology industries, the company said.

The company said more than 70 percent of its products are exported.
