Night closures of northbound lanes of North Harbor Drive will run through Aug. 29, as work continues on the $28.6 million Phase 1 of the North Embarcadero improvement project in downtown San Diego.

A statement from the Port of San Diego said night closures began Aug. 12 and will run through Aug. 29. Northbound lanes of North Harbor Drive will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, as workers install utility crossings.

Traffic is being detoured to Pacific Highway up to Ash Street. The port district said West Broadway will continue to be closed until September between Pacific Highway and North Harbor Drive.

Contractor USS Cal Builders has completed repaving north of the B Street Cruise Ship Terminal, in front of the Holiday Inn.

The North Embarcadero project’s first phase, with an expected completion of fall 2013, includes relocating North Harbor Drive to the east and improving the waterfront esplanade from the B Street Pier to the former Navy Pier.

The project was funded by the port district, city of San Diego and the city’s Centre City Development Corp.
