TurboTax, the San Diego-based unit of Intuit Inc. that makes software to file federal and state income taxes, said recently that sales are up by more than 1 million copies from last year.

Total units sold through March 17 were 17.5 million, compared with 16.2 million for the like period of 2011.

Sales of the desktop version were down 3 percent from last year, but sales of the web-based version were up by 14 percent, resulting in an overall increase of 8 percent, Intuit said.
