Australia-based Westfield Group this fall will launch a $180 million renovation and expansion of its Westfield UTC mall, which will include a new, 14-screen ArcLight Cinema Co. movie theater.

Westfield announced Sept. 8 that the renovation, set for completion by December 2012, will also include new shops, full-service restaurants and a “sophisticated new dining terrace.” Westfield Senior Vice President Tom Tierney said in a statement that the center will see the arrival of a Tender Greens organic restaurant and an expanded version of 24 Hour Fitness called Super-Sport club.

The mall operator said more than 70 existing store facades will be updated, and there will be a new children’s play area and family lounge. The project is expected to create 2,400 new jobs, including 1,000 construction jobs, with an estimated economic impact of more than $175 million according to Westfield.

The new theater will be the first in San Diego County for Los Angeles-based ArcLight. In its own statement, the company said its theaters operate with no commercials, all-reserved seating and no late seating after movies have begun.

Amenities include extra-wide seats with double armrests, stadium seating, digital projection and full-service concession areas.
