Escondido Asphalt Firm Grows With Acquisition

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Escondido-based George Weir Asphalt Construction Inc. has acquired Advanced Concrete, another locally based company that does road construction, repair and related infrastructure work.

Company President George Weir said by phone that the transaction price is not being disclosed. The acquisition closed in June, and Advanced has since been absorbed as a division of Weir’s firm, retaining its Escondido offices. An announcement about the acquisition was made Oct. 17.

Weir’s company was started in 1979, and the acquisition brings its local employee count to approximately 80, including about 12 who worked at Advance. Weir said the acquisition of Advance, which was founded in 1987, will help his firm grow its local customer base.

Weir’s prominent recent clients included the city of Escondido, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, and commercial clients such as General Atomics. Last year, the firm started a pothole campaign in Escondido, where it volunteered its crew’s time one day a week to fill potholes on city streets.
