Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP has been talking about a merger with Washington, D.C.-based McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP, the two law firms said Nov. 14.

The firms said that there isn’t any definitive agreement as yet, but have been in discussions that are a “culmination of a relationship spanning several years during which the two firms have grown to appreciate the high caliber of professionals and value delivered to clients.”

Founded in 1873 by Moses Luce, Luce Forward is ranked fourth on the San Diego Business Journal’s latest Law Firms list with 104 local lawyers as of Jan. 1. It is also the oldest firm on the list.

It has six offices in the state, including downtown San Diego, the Carmel Valley/Del Mar area, and Rancho Santa Fe.

McKenna Long is much larger, with 475 attorney and public policy advisers, and has offices in nine cities in the United States and one in Brussels.

Luce Forward’s main areas of practice include intellectual property, family wealth, nonprofits, insurance, real estate and environmental law.

McKenna Long’s expertise includes corporate law, government contracts, health care, intellectual property, technology, finance, public policy and real estate.
