The board of Sempra Energy announced late June 27 that it has elected Debra L. Reed as chief executive officer of the $9 billion energy company.

Reed also joins the company board.

Donald E. Felsinger steps down as CEO and will continue in the role of Sempra’s executive chairman until his planned retirement in late 2012, the company said.

Reed has been executive vice president of Sempra since April 2010. Before that she served as president and CEO of Sempra’s utilities, San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and Southern California Gas Co.

Reed, 55, has a civil engineering degree from the University of Southern California. She has worked with Sempra Energy companies for 33 years.

Sempra, which operates regulated utilities as well as unregulated energy businesses, is a Fortune 500 company. Its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange as SRE.
