Military Construction Work to Keep Barnhart Busy

Barnhart said recently that it landed a series of military construction contracts totaling $35.7 million.

One contract is for an $8.84 million project for the design and construction of a large fire crash rescue station at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield. The project is slated for completion by December 2010.

Barnhart will also be responsible for the design and construction of a Special Operations Forces combat crew training facility at Naval Base Coronado. This contract is worth $8.65 million and the work is also expected to be completed by December 2010.

Two other contracts, which are slated for child development centers at Naval Base Coronado, total $10.9 million. Money from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act is funding the projects. The two centers will be able to house 286 children. Completion of the work is slated for January 2011.

Additionally, a $7.27 million contract, also funded by ARRA, is calling for the repair and renovation of a four-story bachelor enlisted quarters. The pre-existing quarters serve as billeting for the School of Infantry at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Barnhart is contracted to repair and renovate two-person sleeping rooms, administrative offices, TV lounges, game and vending areas, a library, and laundry rooms. It also is replacing windows and wiring, and installing a new roof.

A subsidiary of Atlanta-based Heery International, Barnhart is based in the Rancho Bernardo area.

Barnhart Completes $42.7M High School Building

Antelope Valley Union High School District and Barnhart announced Aug. 11 the completion of a classroom building at Eastside High School in Lancaster.

Barnhart was the general contractor on the $42.7 million, 191,000-square-foot core classroom building, which now houses 31 classrooms, 15 science labs, four computer labs, six special education rooms and a 930-person capacity library.

The Barnhart team included Chris Haga, senior vice president; Richard Bruce, executive vice president of field operations; Maria Howell, project manager; Edward Ridgeway, superintendent; and Tiger Clifton, superintendent assistant. NTD Architecture acted as the lead designer.

Dynalectric Working on County Operations Center

Emcor Group said Aug. 18 that one of its subsidiaries, Dynalectric San Diego, gained a contract for the installation of electrical systems within two new buildings at the San Diego County Operations Center. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by last week’s deadline.

The two four-story, 150,000-square-foot office buildings are part of an expansion project for the center.

Dynalectric San Diego is contracted to install all electrical systems required for the buildings. Work will include installing infrastructure raceways for teledata, security and fire alarm systems; expanding the center’s campus loop from the central plant to a new gas switch that will sustain the two buildings; core and shell electrical construction, including a fire alarm system in each building; installation of lighting in areas surrounding each building; and installing a 2,000-kilowatt emergency generator, which will supply a full load to one of the buildings.

The project aims to comply with the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver certification rating standards.

Connecticut-based Emcor says it’s a Fortune 500 company with estimated 2009 revenues of $5.5 billion to $5.7 billion.

SGIS Secures $130 Million Army Engineering Contract

The U.S. Army awarded SGIS a $130 million engineering and installation support contract in support of project manager, defense communications and Army transmission systems, or PM DCATS, the defense contractor said Aug. 12.

The contract work will be based out of Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Hood in Texas, among other locations.

Sorrento Mesa-based SGIS is acting as a part of the Apptis team for the project. SGIS will provide engineering, integration, installation, testing and transition technology solutions for the PM DCATS customer base. PM DCATS oversees a collection of 100 projects that support joint war fighters, major commands and combatant commanders worldwide.

Privately held SGIS reported revenue of $88 million in 2008 and $62.4 million in 2007.
