Meetings Planned On Convention Center Expansion

San Diego Convention Center and Port of San Diego officials have scheduled two public meetings, where residents and businesses can give input on a proposed $550 million expansion of the San Diego Convention Center.

The gatherings are slated for July 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel, at 1 Park Blvd.; and July 16, from 10 a.m. to noon at the convention center, 111 W. Harbor Drive.

A statement from the San Diego Convention Center Corp., which operates the facility, said the gatherings will primarily examine public access, view corridors, and program and design matters related to a planned rooftop public space.

Design team representatives from Fentress Architects and Civitas Inc., along with convention center and port district representatives, will gather feedback and present available details on the planning process.

City and port officials are finalizing financing arrangements for a project that would add more than 400,000 square feet of space to the convention center.

City and convention center officials recently revised the estimated cost of the expansion to $550 million, down from a previous estimate of $711 million. Officials said the project has been redesigned to achieve greater efficiency and improve public spaces.

Under a plan proposed by the mayor’s office, local hotels would contribute up to $30 million annually to help finance the expansion through assessments ranging from 1 percent to 3 percent per room night, depending on the hotel’s proximity to the convention center.

San Diego’s expansion is expected to generate an additional $17.1 million in annual convention center business, according to the mayor’s Citizen’s Task Force.
