Illumina Makes Acquisition

San Diego-based genetic testing company Illumina Inc. has acquired a Wisconsin manufacturer of DNA sample preparation products used for genetic sequencing.

According to a Jan. 11 press announcement, Illumina said it acquired Epicentre Biotechnologies of Madison, Wis. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Illumina said a key component of the acquisition is direct access to Epicentre’s proprietary Nextera technology for next-generation sequencing library preparation, which greatly simplifies genetic analysis workflows and reduces time from sample preparation to answer.

The technology will also translate into greater ease of use, lower costs and faster turnaround times for customers’ sequencing applications, according to Illumina.

Founded in 1998, Illumina’s customers include genomic research centers, pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, clinical research organizations and biotechnology companies.
