Construction

T.B. Penick & Sons Inc. announced the appointment of Jaime Awford, a 20-year construction industry veteran, as vice president. Awford will be instrumental in securing general contracting and concrete construction work in military, public and private sectors. He was formally vice president and general manager at Turner Construction and has worked on projects in Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington. Awford serves on the local board of directors for Habitat for Humanity International and is active with the Downtown San Diego Partnership.

Defense

Marine Corps Installations West hosted a change of command ceremony for the Officer in Charge of Construction Marine Corps Installations West to mark the change of command as Capt. Michael D. Williamson relieved Capt. Joseph A. Campbell as commanding officer of OICC MCIWEST. Williamson is the second officer to fill the position since its establishment in August 2008. Williamson is surface warfare and Seabee combat warfare qualified, a registered professional engineer in California and a member of both the Acquisition Professional Community and the Society of American Military Engineers.

Hospitality

Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa announced the appointment of Beverly Matthews as general manager. Matthews will oversee all the operations for the 49-suite resort, which includes a restaurant and a full-service spa. Prior to joining Rancho Valencia, she developed and managed Twin Farms in Barnard, Vt., and began her career with the concept, development and operation of Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands. Matthews has been applying her 25 years of focused hospitality experience to consulting on development projects, including Maui’s Kapalua Bay Resort and Aman Resorts’ Norman’s Cay project.

David Cohn and Lesley Cohn of the family-owned Cohn Restaurant Group Inc. were recently honored with three gold medallion awards by the California Restaurant Association at the 26th Annual Gold Medallion Awards on June 1. The awards were designated for 333 Pacific — Best Neighborhood; The Bungalow — Best Continental/French; and Indigo Grill — Best Ethnic. These awards demonstrate their commitment to providing exceptional hospitality service. Cohn Restaurant Group opened its first restaurant, The Corvette Diner, in 1986.

Law

Cynthia Morgan has been named a partner at Higgs Fletcher & Mack. Morgan practices in the areas of land use, real estate, business, and public agency. She has also been a deputy city attorney in the city of Oceanside and the city of San Diego. Morgan was a municipal legal fellow for the League of California Cities and a Georgetown Law Women’s Law and Public Policy Fellow where she was placed with the National Association of Women Judges.

The Thomas Jefferson School of Law board of trustees has elected three new members. They are Dennis Burks, Randy K. Jones and David Ramirez.

Burks is an executive in the tourism and travel industry. He held the positions of executive vice president and general manager of Sea World San Diego among other high-profile positions.

Jones is an assistant U.S. attorney with the U.S. Attorney’s office in San Diego. He manages and supervises complex federal litigation and jury trial matters and is the president of the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association in San Diego.

Stephen J. Oddo

Robbins Umeda LLP has announced that Stephen J. Oddo has joined the firm as partner. Formally a partner at Coughlin Stoia Geller Rudman & Robbins LLP (now known as Robbins, Geller, Rudman & Dowd LLP), he will focus his practice at Robbins Umeda on securities class actions involving corporate mergers and acquisitions. Oddo received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law and Master of Science degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Jeremy C. Shafer has joined Gerson Law Firm APC to focus on real estate transaction law, including real estate finance and title insurance matters. Shafer has represented title companies, lenders, brokers, tenants and homeowners. Prior to joining Gerson Law Firm, he was an associate at Boss Law Firm and served as in-house counsel for a real estate and mortgage banker in downtown San Diego. Shafer received his Juris Doctor and master’s of business administration degree from the University of San Diego.

Ramirez is the executive assistant chief of police and a 26-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department. As second in command, he is in charge of the department’s daily operation, $408 million budget, the internal affairs unit and media services.

Nonprofit

Kathryn Kanjo

Kathryn Kanjo has been appointed the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s new chief curator and head of the curatorial department, concluding a comprehensive international search. Kanjo is currently the director of the University Art Museum at UC Santa Barbara and plans to assume her new position July 20. Prior to this she was the executive director of Artpace San Antonio and curator of contemporary art at the Portland Art Museum. Kanjo received her Master of Arts degree in art history and museum studies from the University of Southern California.

Real Estate

Jase Prewett, director of purchasing for Brookfield Homes San Diego, has been designated a Certified Green Building Professional by Build It Green, a membership supported nonprofit organization that administers the Green Point Rated program. Two years ago, Prewett was tasked with creating a business plan for Brookfield’s entry into the local green-building movement. A purchasing veteran, he was uniquely qualified to analyze and specify new products and systems for Brookfield’s first eco-savvy community, Rockrose at The Foothills in Carlsbad.

Technology

NTN Buzztime Inc. announced that Christopher George has joined the company as chief information officer. George previously served as an outside consultant to NTN Buzztime in this capacity with a focus on optimizing and updating infrastructure to support strategic growth plans and streamlining operations. His experience in the technology industry has included his founding the Protelligent Inc. technology consulting firm, and holding technical leadership positions at InterKnowlogy, TheBigStore.com and Shopping.com.

Globaltel Media has appointed Lauren Katayama as its political chief of staff. Katayama will direct the company’s political and nonprofit efforts and initiatives. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social ecology with a concentration in criminology and law from UC Irvine she earned her California Clear Teaching Credential. Katayama previously served as a California credentialed educator and as vice president of H&M Financial Group.

Miscellaneous

Neil Wilson was hired for the dual role of marina manager for Fifth Avenue Landing LLC and director of business development for Marine Group Boat Works LLC. Wilson’s primary focus is to build new relationships with yacht owners and captains while helping maintain existing ones. As marina manager, he will oversee all operations at the boutique mega-yacht marina located in downtown San Diego. Wilson previously spent 10 years working as the marketing manager at South Bay Boatyard and held a similar post at Driscoll Boatworks on Shelter Island.

Finance

Janet Acheatel brings 30 years of experience to her new role as an independent contractor and registered principal at Raymond James Financial Services. Through her consulting practice, she offers comprehensive services designed to help women, specifically widowed women, understand and manage their financial lives. Prior to this encore, she was a portfolio manager at Brandes Investment Partners and an institutional client service officer with Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management. She is a founding member and past president of the Professional Association for Investment Communications Resources and currently serves on the Advisory Committee.
