Local Employment Picture Unchanged From September

San Diego County’s unemployment rate remained at an unchanged 10.6 percent in September from August’s revised 10.6 percent rate, according to an Oct. 22 report from the state’s Employment Development Department.

Though high, the jobless rate was worse for California, which was at a seasonably adjusted 12.4 percent, the same level as August. But the local rate was above the jobless rate of 9.2 percent for the nation.

From August to September, the region’s nonfarm employment lost a net of 100 jobs, bringing the total work force to 1.2 million.

The largest gain was in government, which added 2,100 jobs. Two other areas showing gains were educational and health services, up 1,200 jobs; and trade, transportation and utilities, up 500. The biggest monthly loss was in leisure and hospitality, down by 1,300 jobs.

Over the 12 months to September, the region’s nonfarm employment has decreased by 4,400 jobs, or 0.4 percent. Of 11 job sectors, all showed net losses except for professional and business services, up 4,800 jobs; and education and health services, up 2,000 jobs.

The biggest net loss came in the government sector which shrunk by 3,700 jobs over the year.
