Sean Porter

SCS Engineers has hired Sean Porter as senior technical adviser and stormwater manager. Porter will be in charge of all SCS stormwater practices in the San Diego area. His 10 years of experience includes designing and implementing large-scale water quality and sediment monitoring programs for state, municipal, transportation, federal and low-impact development. These programs have included Best Management Practice effectiveness assessments.

Government and nonprofit

Thomas Clark, former deputy chief and battalion chief of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, is replacing Frank Sotelo in his position as public safety director. Clark has 37 years of firefighting experience, including time spent as an engineer, captain, deputy chief and battalion chief for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. He has an Associate of Science degree in fire science from San Diego City College as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in public administration from San Diego State University.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego has recently added Thomas Drake and Denny O’Leary to its board of directors.

Drake is the president and chief operating officer of National Technologies Associates Inc., a defense contracting business which specializes in naval aviation products and services. Founded by Drake and a business partner in 1984, NTA has more than 1,000 employees and has operations across the country. He worked for the federal government, managing the F/A-18 program for the U.S. Navy at North Island before starting NTA.

O’Leary is the vice president of Marketing Partnerships for the San Diego Chargers. In his current role, O’Leary manages the strategic development and day-to-day operations of the Corporate Sales and Services Department. This is O’Leary’s 11th season in the NFL and his ninth with the Chargers. Prior to joining the Chargers, O’Leary worked with the Denver Broncos, Integrated Sports International, the Utah Grizzlies of the International Hockey League, and the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers.

Jerry Henberger

The Parkinson’s Disease Association of San Diego announces that Jerry Henberger has been named chief development officer of the nonprofit organization. Henberger comes to the association with nearly 10 years of fundraising experience, which will be used to increase revenue to PDASD to support the Parkinson’s community and fund research for a cure. He volunteers his time with many organizations, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International and Knights of Columbus as well as serving on the board of directors of the Point Loma Rotary Club.

Health care and Biotech

The La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology’s board of directors has elected Katina Tsakopoulos as a new member. Tsakopoulos is a managing partner of the Tsakopoulos Family Partnership, which manages real estate assets in northern and central California. Along with her business activities, Tsakopoulos has also been active with several charities focused on children’s issues. Over the years, her various activities have included serving on the founding board of the Mercy Perinatal Recovery Network, an organization affiliated with Mercy Hospital in Sacramento, including two years as chairwoman.

NexMed Inc. announced that Deirdre Y. Gillespie, president and chief executive officer of La Jolla Pharmaceutical Co., has been appointed to the company’s board of directors, effective immediately. Prior to joining La Jolla Pharmaceutical in 2006, Gillespie served as president and CEO of Oxxon Therapeutics Inc. and chief operating officer of Vical Inc., and also held a number of management positions at DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Co. including vice president of marketing.

Kathy Scott

BioSurplus Inc. announced that Kathy Scott has been named chief financial officer. For the past 15 years, Scott served as a partner with RA Capital Advisors LLC, a private investment bank, where she completed financial transactions totaling billions of dollars of mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, private equity and debt financing and restructurings for a broad range of corporate clients. Scott graduated magna cum laude from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics/business and was named to membership in The Phi Beta Kappa Society. Scott is a vice chair on the board of directors of the YMCA of San Diego County.

Insurance

John Toon of Snapp & Associates Insurance Services Inc. has been named 2010 Agent of the Year by the Insurance Brokers and Agents of San Diego. Toon was selected based on his dedication and commitment to the local and statewide association, the insurance industry as a whole and to fellow professionals in San Diego County. Toon was named president of Snapp & Associates in 1999 after previously serving as both vice president and a customer service associate. He currently oversees management of the agency’s staff and commercial lines sales. For the past six years he has served on the board of directors for the Insurance Brokers and Agents of San Diego and served as president in 2009. From 2005 to 2008, Toon chaired the association’s annual golf tournament, an industry event raising more than $15,000 for local charities.

Law

Eximex Inc. announced the hiring of Dan Kehr of Kehr Law as its new chief legal counsel in the United States. Kehr has a broad business and legal background as an attorney and entrepreneur who started his first business at the age of 8. Kehr Law provides Eximex with the necessary framework enabling them to operate with confidence, stability and a high degree of predictability. Kehr earned his bachelor’s degree from the UCLA and his law degree from California Western School of Law.

The Thomas Jefferson School of Law board of trustees has approved recommendations to grant tenure to two law professors and to promote a third. Alex Kreit was set to be promoted to associate professor, and associate professors Maurice Dyson and Richard Winchester were granted tenure, all effective July 1.

Kreit is director of the law school’s Center for Law and Social Justice. He teaches criminal law, criminal procedure and property law. Professor Kreit is also the chair of San Diego Medical Marijuana Task Force.

Dyson teaches law, equality and educational institutions seminar, torts I, torts II and is a prominent scholar and national leader in the field of equal education opportunity.

Winchester is one of the leading authorities on federal employment taxes and the only legal scholar whose reform proposals have been considered as a policy option by Congress.

Chuck Dunning

Chuck Dunning has been promoted to vice president and general manager of XETV San Diego 6. Dunning, a 31-year veteran of the station, was previously general sales manager, a position he has held since 1996. He has also managed the Programming, Promotion and Research departments, and has served on the management team that brought local news programming to the station in 1999.

Real Estate

Cassidy Turley BRE Commercial announced that Kevin Tremblay has joined the company’s industrial division as a landlord and tenant specialist. Tremblay will be working with the Aberg team, a team featuring brothers Bryce Aberg and Brant Aberg, who are responsible for more than 4 million square feet of industrial space in central San Diego. Tremblay will focus on institutional property leasing and sales.

Prior to joining Cassidy Turley, Tremblay was an office and industrial specialist for Cushman & Wakefield. He has also worked at ECP Commercial focusing on industrial properties in the Miramar and Sorrento Mesa submarkets. Tremblay is a member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties.

Jose Melchor has joined the McMillin Realty team at its Terra Nova office. He specializes in first-time and move-up buyers. Melchor attended Southwestern College. In 1987, he started his real estate career with Century 21 Mae West, which later became Prudential California Realty. Melchor was a coach with the Tom Ferry Organization and the Success Strategies Institute. With the Tom Ferry Organization, he has coached more than 100 clients over a two-year time frame. He was a President’s Circle member and earned the Chairman Circle credential for three consecutive years at his previous brokerage. In his off time, Melchor is a coach for a Parkview Little League baseball team.
