Business Group Lands Hilda Solis as Keynoter

Hilda Solis, President Obama’s U.S. secretary of labor, has been tabbed to be the keynote speaker at the South County Economic Development Council’s Annual Summit on Sept. 18 at the San Diego Convention Center. That’s quite a catch for the influential economic development group, but Solis knows the region. She was born and grew up in Southern California, and was the first Latina to be elected to the California State Senate back in the mid-1990s after having served in the Assembly for a single term … And here’s an item just in time for the Labor Day weekend. The book, “Instant Turnaround,” explains how any bad boss can become a great boss and any workplace can turn productivity around. Paul’s sending copies of his new effort to bad bosses nominated anonymously with the tag line: “Bad Boss Tag , You need to read this book and make some changes.” For details on his promotion, browse on over to BossTrenz.com. Paul has a bad boss wall of shame there, too Now speaking of great bosses, Robert Payne, a prominent local businessman and community leader, has been named the San Diego Rotary Club’s Mr. San Diego for 2009. Payne gets his honorary plaque Sept. 17 in recognition of longtime humanitarian achievements and civic contributions. Former recipients include famed oceanographer Roger Revelle, the man behind UC San Diego, and shopping mall developer (the man behind Horton Plaza) Ernest W. Hahn, real estate broker and towering local civic figure Malin Burnham and recently deceased legendary newspaperman Herb Klein. Payne was a founding member of the Holiday Bowl, among many, many other honors and distinctions. By the way, the club is the world’s third largest, with a membership of more than 550 … The state Air Resources Board fines two area motorcycle dealers $180,000 for illegal sales. In 2006, ARB cops received a tip that San Diego-based GP Motorcycles and Escondido-based Moto Forza were illegally selling off-road motorcycles as on-road models. Off-highway vehicles do not meet federal motor vehicle safety standards , or ARB’s emission standards , required of on-road motorcycles. ARB revoked all the on-road licenses and registrations for the illegal bikes sold by the two dealers And finally, for some news on the lighter side, save these dates. The 34th annual Harvest Festival returns to the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Oct. 23-25. Like previous years, this festival will feature arts and crafts plus gourmet food and live entertainment. Details at harvestfestival.com While we’re talking about fun in the sun, don’t forget ArtWalk on the Bay, which takes place Sept. 12-13. Details can be found at artwalkonthebay.org Laff of the week. It seems the Invisible Man married the Invisible Woman, and had kids. They weren’t much to look at either! My thanks to a recent “Car Talk” show on KPBS radio. With that, I’m outta here!
