Navy Scientists First to ID Flu Bug

Here? the local angle on the news of the day. Navy scientists played an important role in the identification of the first swine flu cases detected in San Diego County the week of April 20. Cmdr. Kevin Russell, who heads the Respiratory Diseases Research group at the Naval Health Research Center here, and his fellow researchers are given credit by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on its Web site for their nifty detective work ?Lyric Opera San Diego participated in a Twitter.com contest with 20 other opera companies worldwide. Opera aficionados here, there and everywhere were asked to summarize the plots of famous operas in 140 characters or fewer ?the limitation imposed by Twitter.com. The contest was set to end May 3, but I thought one of the best entries summarized the plot of Bizet? wonderful opera ?armen? ?on Jose: I hate Carmen. I love Carmen! I miss Carmen?I hate Carmen! Knife.?I?l pass along the local winners, who get free tickets to a Lyric Opera show, next week ?James Arthur Ray, of ?armonic Wealth?best-selling fame, held a ribbon-cutting April 30 to celebrate the expansion of his office in Carlsbad. Ray claims to be one of the leading personal success strategists in the country, and he? probably right. His $1,200 seminars are drawing big numbers, according to a piece in The New York Times. He opened his first North County office in early 2005 with four employees, but now has 24 ?The local angle on a ballet based in East County ?City Ballet of San Diego closes out its current season with a program that includes the world premiere of ?he Ramona Myth,?May 8-10. The ballet is based on the local legend of a young girl for whom the East County burg of Ramona is named. Works by Stravinsky and Balanchine will also be performed at the Spreckels Theatre. Bella Heule has been elected chairperson of the Airport Authority Advisory Committee, a position she?l hold for the next year. Heule, who speaks four languages, was named to the post by the authority? Thella Bowens, who runs operations at Lindbergh Field ?Wrap your mind around this, so to speak. On May 13, UC San Diego cognitive science professor Terry Jernigan will explain how the brain adapts over a lifetime in response to disease, drugs and life experiences to the Social Sciences Supper Club.
