Trash Hauler Sees Potential in Construction Debris

Waste Management and local officials from the city of El Cajon officially opened a new recycling center aimed at decreasing the refuse from construction sites to landfills and retrieving materials for future uses, the company said June 30.

The $7 million construction and demolition processing and recycling center is capable of processing up to 130,000 tons of commercial construction waste and other recyclables annually, although that’s clearly not happening these days.

Waste Management said waste from construction sites accounts for more than 22 percent of the overall waste stream in California, and 35 percent of the waste at the Miramar landfill. On an average year, more than 1 million tons of such waste is generated countywide, the company said.

“With the new sort line, we can take (recycling) to the next level and help contractors actually recycle these materials as opposed to simply hauling them to the landfill,” said Carl Scherbaum, who manages the center .

When it’s fully staffed, the center could employ up to 30 people, Waste Management said.
