Sempra Energy Gives $200K to Assist 38 Graduating Seniors

Sempra Energy has awarded $200,000 in scholarship money to 38 high school seniors to continue their education. This is the 10th anniversary of Sempra’s scholarship program. Winners were selected on academic and non-academic criteria, including academic achievement, leadership, community involvement and appraisals The Milagros Unit Auxiliary of Rady Children’s Hospital annual event was held on June 7 at the Del Mar Plaza. The event, which raised $37,000, was sponsored by Gente Bien Magazine, Argentine Tango Concepts, Ultrasigns and Eli’s Wine and Food Market Place. Participating restaurants included Il Fornaio, Sunset Bar and Grill, Pacifica Del Mar and Sammy’s Woodfire Pizza The International Parking Institute announced the winners of its awards of excellence competition. The UC San Diego campus Hopkins Parking Structure won an award for outstanding achievement in design Malashock Dance Co. received a pledge of $5,000 from Elaine Lipinsky to help with a year-end $10,000 fundraising challenge Robert Shillman, CEO of Cognex, donated $25,000 to the Serving Older Holocaust Survivors program of Jewish Family Services. Shillman’s gift enabled the program to reach its fundraising goal of $216,000. The program provides home care and emergency services The Society for Human Resource Management presented the $50,000 Michael R. Losey Human Resource Research Award to Benjamin Schneider at its 61st annual conference. The award recognizes human resource researchers whose contributions significantly advance the field of human resource management Sharp HospiceCare, Coronado Yacht Club and the Cortez Racing Association is hosting an annual Regatta Aug. 28-29. Sponsors include Biogen Idec, San Diego National Bank, Angelica Textile Services and Union Bank Erickson-Hall Construction Co. donated $10,000 to Escondido Union High School to be used for scholarships Rite Aid Pharmacy was the title sponsor of the 27th annual United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego County Golf Classic. The event, held July 27 in Carlsbad, was sponsored by Albertsons, Union Bank, Videpost and Interior Specialists Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in San Diego and Temecula Valley raised $55,000 at its 3rd annual golf tournament held June 22 in Rancho Bernardo. Proceeds benefit several agencies, including Boys & Girls Club of San Dieguito, Meals on Wheels, Ramona Senior Center, Arthritis Foundation and the SDLGBT Community Center The Junior Seau Foundation awarded $100,000 in scholarships to 23 graduating seniors. The program is funded with donations from Fujitsu, EDCO Disposal, Qualcomm, Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians and Harrah’s Rincon Casino & Resort. “The goal of our program is to give young people a chance to get an education, to better themselves and succeed in the workplace,” Seau said Scripps Health CEO Chris Van Gorder received the 2009 B’nai B’rith National Healthcare Award for his work in setting standards in health and education initiatives that improve people’s lives. The National City branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego received a new playground from KaBoom! in partnership with Home Depot. The playground is valued at $80,000.
