Union-Tribune Announces New Layoffs

The San Diego Union-Tribune said in its Aug. 13 issue that it had eliminated 112 more positions and was making other changes to make its business more viable.

Among those given pink slips were longtime editorial page editor Bob Kittle and opinion page editor Bernie Jones. Also let go were David Coddon, editor of the paper’s Night & Day entertainment supplement and Brian Cragin, a graphic design editor, as well as staff photographers Laura Embry and Yvette de la Garza. Reporters on the list included Mark Arner, Rick Rodgers and Zach Woodruff, sources said.

It’s unknown whether those laid off were given 60-day notices, in accordance with state labor law. That law pertains to companies letting go of 50 or more workers at a time. It’s also unknown whether they were given severance pay.

There were at least three rounds of layoffs when the U-T was owned by the Copley Press. It was sold to Beverly Hills-based Platinum Equity in early May and 192 employees were subsequently laid off.

In a statement issued Aug. 12, the Union-Tribune also said it planned to offer new products to advertisers, reinstate certain employee pay and benefits, and make “a substantial investment” in a computer-aided page production system. Currently, graphic designers paste up most of the newspaper’s pages by hand.

Sources said the latest job cuts would affect all departments.
