Grossmont Hospital Cleared to Receive Government Funds

An investigation into Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa has satisfied state health officials, who said the hospital can continue to qualify for government funding, according to a letter dated Sept. 10 and addressed to the hospital by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

A publicist for the hospital said Sept. 12 that the hospital has yet to receive the letter.

Grossmont, which claims the county’s busiest emergency room, was at risk of losing all its Medicare and Medi-Cal payments, following a series of events that called attention to serious deficiencies in patient care. Three patients died in March and April after they failed to receive the help they needed.

State health investigators uncovered other deficiencies in patient care during visits to the hospital in April and May. Officials with Grossmont submitted their correction plans to the state July 29, and were visited again by state investigators late last month.

Jack Cheevers, spokesman for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, said it’s uncommon for hospitals under investigation to lose their government funding.

“When my agency raises a red flag, the hospital tends to get very good at cleaning it up,” he said.
