Nice Guy of the Year Is Grille Owner

Jeffrey Strauss, owner of Solana Beach restaurant Pamplemousse Grille, was honored by the Nice Guys on Oct. 4. at its annual gala held at the Marriott Hotel & Marina. The Nice Guy of the Year award is presented each year to an individual who demonstrates commitment, generosity and caring for the community. Strauss helped raise money for numerous community organizations. “Strauss’s achievements as a businessman are matched only by his generosity and caring for others in our community,” said NG President Archie Kuehn Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership a $500,000, three-year grant to develop the Balboa Park Learning Institute. This new program will offer specialized professional training to 2,500 staff and 7,000 volunteers in the park. The program, which was developed among the 24 institutions comprising the cultural partnership, should commence in 2009, according to David Lang, executive director Junior Achievement of San Diego and Imperial Counties will honor three members of the business community at its 20th annual Business Hall of Fame Awards. The awards are scheduled to be presented to Peter Farrell, top executive at ResMed; Tina Nova, top executive at Genoptix; and Conrad Prebys, owner, Progress Management. “This year, we are delighted to welcome three exceptionally successful and inspiring individuals to join our 44 Lifetime Laureates in the San Diego Business Hall of Fame,” said Joanne Pastula, top executive at JA. The awards will be presented Nov. 7 at the Hotel del Coronado The Association of Surfing Professionals held its final day of the Roxy Jam Cardiff event Sept. 21. Schick Quattro for Women presented winner Cori Schumacher with a $15,000 purse prize and title of Women’s U.S. Regional Longboarding champion. A $3,000 Schick Quattro for Women Style Award went to Summer Romero. Hansen’s Surf Shop gave a second $3,000 purse prize to Bianca Valenti The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Pacific South Coast chapter based in Carlsbad raised $1 million for research and programs at its seventh annual 2008 Challenge Walk MS. Each of the 294 walkers, 61 of whom suffer with MS, a chronic and disabling disease of the central nervous system, raised a minimum of $2,500 in donations The American Red Cross honored 14 local heroes who have made a difference through individual acts of heroism at its sixth annual Real Heroes Awards Breakfast on Sept. 26. The Wendell Cutting Humanitarian Award was presented to Benyapa Becks as an individual who embodies the spirit of humanitarianism and public service … Fresh Start Surgical Gifts received $10,000 from the Louis and Harold Price Foundation and $5,000 from the French-Masserini Fund in support of Fresh Start’s surgery weekend program. These contributions help provide free reconstructive surgery and related services to children and young adults The Prudential Foundation and Prudential Financial awarded $1,000 grants to two county residents for their chosen charity. Carmen Cooley-Graham of La Mesa was a 2008 Prudential CARES Volunteer Grants Award recipient and donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International. Howard Wolford of San Diego donated his grant to the American Red Cross, San Diego chapter Mark Olsson, president of DeepSea Power & Light, was honored with the title of Fellow of the Marine Technology Society at the society’s annual awards luncheon held Sept. 16 during the OCEANS ’08 MTS/IEEE Quebec City Conference in Canada. Olsson has dedicated his professional life to advancing marine science and technology Karen Hiatt won the Activity Assistant of the Year Award from the Southern California Association of Activity Professionals. Hiatt is an activity assistant for Silverado Senior Living’s Escondido memory care community. The award was presented at an annual awards banquet at the Hilton Hotel in Del Mar on Sept. 19. Entrants are judged on job performance, commitment, support and interaction with residents and staff.
