Escondido Chamber to Honor Local Businesses at June 6 Awards Dinner

At its annual dinner on June 6, the Escondido Chamber of Commerce will honor Escondido Disposal Inc. with the Large Business of the Year Award, Stone Brewing Co. with the Medium Sized Business of the Year Award and On The Border Mexican Grill and Cantina with the Small Business of the Year Award. The event was planned by Orfila Vineyards. George Weir, founder of Escondido Sand & Gravel, will be recognized as Business Leader of the Year at the chamber dinner.

The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce held its annual Outstanding Educational Program Awards Dinner on May 2 at La Costa Resort & Spa. Carlsbad schools and educators are honored for making learning gratifying for their students. The winners were Adopted or Adapted Program, Pacific Rim Elementary School; Entrepreneurial Program, Mission Estancia Elementary School; Innovative Program, Aviara Oaks Middle School; and Science Program, Pacific Rim Elementary School.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez presented Sharp HealthCare with the 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award at a ceremony held in Washington, D.C., April 23. Sharp is one of five organizations nationwide, and the only one in San Diego, to receive the award, the nation’s highest presidential honor for quality and excellence.

Sharp HealthCare Foundation’s 18th annual Victories of Spirit event was held on May 9 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Eric Galvez, Suzanne Szollar, Tyrone McKinnon and Bill Torres were given the Eagle Spirit Award that symbolizes the Navajo sign of the most potent healing power. They were recognized for overcoming catastrophic injury or illness to give back to the community.

Kenneth A. Macias, founder and chairman of Macias Gini & O’Connell LLP, was named Entrepreneur of the Year at this year’s San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce annual fund-raising gala. Macias was honored for his leadership of a successful professional services firm.

The American Red Cross recognized volunteers at its annual recognition event on April 19. The chapter’s highest honor, the Cabrillo Award, was presented to Chula Vista resident Bernice Heiter for 35 years with the blood pressure clinic. Each year this award is presented to the volunteer who has demonstrated remarkable service to the Red Cross, along with leadership.

The Del Mar Fairgrounds has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its recycling program. Tim Fennell, CEO and general manager, accepted the award in San Francisco.

Brigitte Carino, director of operations for Sentek Consulting is a recipient of the 2008 YWCA of San Diego’s Tribute to Women and Industry, or TWIN, award. She will be honored at a luncheon at the San Diego Convention Center on June 27. The luncheon spotlights women who are honored by their firm’s executives, co-workers, families and friends.

Ann Ellis, director of owner services at Welk Resorts San Diego won the ARDY award in the category of owner/customer relations manager/team at the recent American Resort and Development Convention and Exposition in Las Vegas.

Steve Doyle, president of Brookfield Homes/Riverside division, was honored with a 2008 Monty Award, presented annually to select San Diego State University alumni. Doyle, a 1980 graduate from the College of Engineering, is a supporter of civil engineering programs at SDSU.

Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Nationwide Leadership Council will honor Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County with its Pinnacle Award for achievement. San Diego is one of eight agencies selected to receive the award two years in a row. This council said the local agency has demonstrated pace-setting performance by showing revenue growth of 10 percent or more, a 10 percent increase in the number of children served in mentoring relationships and meets quality standards.
