Dr. Bronner’s Sues Over ‘Organic’ Labels

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, an Escondido-based company, sued 10 competitors and two certifying organizations April 28, saying they are incorrectly using the label “organic.”

The privately held maker of soap and shampoo said it hopes to force the defendants, which include Estee Lauder, to stop making claims that Dr. Bronner’s says are misleading.

Dr. Bronner’s alleges that the companies’ products have the organic label, but are not organic. In some cases, the Escondido company said, the products use petroleum-derived ingredients. In others, they contain ingredients produced using conventional agricultural methods.

Dr. Bronner’s filed its suit in San Francisco Superior Court. Farella Braun & Martel LLP of San Francisco represents Dr. Bronner’s in the matter.
