Wermers Construction Makes Progress on 80-Unit Seniors Apartment Complex



Progress Report

San Diego-based Wermers Corp. is continuing work on the Plaza City Senior Apartments, an 80-unit complex under construction in National City. The parking lot has been paved, framing is 85 percent complete, rough mechanical work has been started on both the first and second floors, and utilities are more than 90 percent completed. The project is expected to be completed in early 2008.

Carrier Johnson, a San Diego-based sustainable architecture and planning firm, announced the opening of three new “green” residence halls on Pitzer College’s campus last Friday. The college in Claremont, known to hold environmental stewardship as a core value, has gained attention from the education community, “green building” organizations, the national media and environmental leaders. Recycled materials, solar photovoltaic cells and a rainwater recycling system were used in the creation of the new halls. Four additional residence halls are in the planning stages.

The county of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation is planning a ground-breaking ceremony for new ball fields located at the intersection of Mast Boulevard and Marathon Parkway in Lakeside. The facility will feature four artificial turf fields, a playground, batting cage and concession stand. The ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 15.

Hacienda Professional Center LLC announced that it will break ground Oct. 15 on a 25,310-square-foot medical and professional office building. San Diego-based Lusardi Construction Co. is the general contractor for the two-story project located on 1.9 acres at Hacienda and Melrose drives in Vista. Designed by architect Rick Davy, the building’s office space is available for sale from 1,300 square feet at $375 per square foot for shell space. The project is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2008.

Johnson & Jennings General Contracting has completed tenant improvements to expand law offices for Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati located in Carmel Valley. The renovation included remodeling existing space to include new offices and administrative areas as well as upgrading kitchen, copy and network rooms. The $500,000 expansion added 7,500 square feet to the firm’s facilities.

Gafcon Inc., a construction management firm with offices in San Diego, has been retained by the city of Irvine to provide design management services as part of a $25 million contract to plan a 1,347-acre park being developed at the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Orange County. Gafcon formed a joint venture partnership with the project’s lead architect, Ken Smith. The project also consists of more than 30 consultants. Upon completion, the Great Park will be nearly twice the size of New York’s Central Park, and will include a 2-mile long canyon, 23-acre lake, botanical gardens, sports fields and other public facilities. The cost estimate for the Great Park exceeds $1 billion.
