State Sets Liquor License Lottery

The state Alcoholic Beverage Control Department is expected to conduct its annual lottery for the sale of general liquor licenses , those that cover the sale of beer, wine and distilled spirits , in November. Applications will be accepted from Sept. 11-22, according to the San Diego Food and Beverage Association.

The cost for a general license is $12,000, while the rate one might expect to pay for an existing license from a business or individual would range between $50,000 to $60,000, said Steve Zolezzi, the association’s executive director. Licenses for the sale of beer and wine are available year-round and are not sold through a lottery.

No exact date has been set for the lottery, but Zolezzi said the local office of the ABC expects it will be in early November.

Only certain counties are eligible for the current lottery, but the list is lengthy and San Diego County is among them. For more information, contact the ABC’s district office at 1350 Front St., Room 5060, in downtown, or call (619) 525-4064.
