Foundation’s Future Looks Bright After Contribution

Northrop Grumman Corp. has given $180,000 to the San Diego Futures Foundation for support of its operations, programs and services across the country.

SDFF is a nonprofit organization that makes information technology available to the broadest range of San Diego County residents through the delivery of hardware, software, communications, training and education.

Proceeds of $170,000 from InkjetLab’s grand opening event went to the Boys & Girls Club of Vista.

The Fred J. Hansen Foundation has given San Diego State University’s new College of Arts & Letters $1.5 million to establish the Hansen Foundation Summer Institute on Conflict Resolution. The program will bring young leaders from developing nations to study at SDSU in the international security and conflict resolution program, an interdisciplinary major housed in the college.

The 17th annual Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge Awards Banquet on Oct. 1 at Silver Gate Yacht Club raised $260,000, benefiting programs of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Aim Marine, Skeeter, Yamaha and Lowrance donated a $35,000 boat, which was raffled off to raise funds.

Major sponsors included the Southern California Tribal Nations, San Diego County Credit Union, Alpine Glass and Pacific Outdoor Adventures.

Alfonso Ribeiro, who is best known for his work on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” sitcom, was the winner of “Celebrity Duets” on Fox TV.

Ribeiro chose Fresh Start Surgical Gifts to be the recipient of his winnings of $100,000. Ribeiro has acted as the celebrity spokesman for Fresh Start since 2005. The nonprofit organization gives reconstructive surgery to disadvantage children with physical deformities.

The American Lung Association hosted its fifth annual Asthma Walk on Sept. 24 at Liberty Station. The event raised $100,000, with 1,200 individuals participating.

Major sponsors included Medicinova, which contributed $15,000, and Team Research San Diego, which donated $10,000.

The Old Globe Theatre hosted its 22nd annual gala, which raised more than $500,000 to benefit the Old Globe and its education and outreach programs.

The underwriters included Conrad Prebys, Audrey Geisel (Dr. Seuss Fund) and Donald and Darlene Shiley.

Voices for Children raised more than $200,000 at its fourth annual Starry, Starry Night event Sept. 25.

Major sponsors included Irving Hughes, KPRI 102.1, Michael and Karen Family Foundation Inc., AMN Healthcare and BIA Cares for Kids.

Voices for Children is a private, nonprofit volunteer organization devoted to helping abused, neglected and abandoned children who have been removed from their homes and placed under the protection of Juvenile Court.

Fisher Scientific International Inc. established the Mary Louise and Charlie Robins Endowed Scholarship Fund for UC San Diego in recognition of Charlie Robins’ devotion to UCSD.

The fund, which will benefit the school’s undergraduate students, will total $250,000.

Robins, a retired businessman, has been committed to UCSD for more than 15 years and is especially known for his support of the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars, helping launch the event in 1996 with then-Chancellor Robert Dynes.

Ed Langmaid, a community relations liaison from BAE Systems, has come up with an idea to easily connect people in the community to military service agencies.

A Web site, www.sandiegotroops.com, helps the military and military families find resources they need and assists community members who want to make donations or volunteer their time.

The site will connect people to nearly 20 military service agencies that support active duty military personnel and their families in San Diego.
