Federal Funds Give ISE a Push

ISE Corp., a Poway manufacturer of electric and hybrid electric drive systems, said it is a participant in four federal grant programs that total $49 million.

The grants, announced Oct. 13 by Rep. Mary Bono, R-Palm Springs, provide funds to multiple programs focused on making hydrogen fuel cell buses a commercial reality.

Founded in 1995 as a developer of vehicles that traverse planets and the moon, ISE shifted to building electric drive systems used mainly by buses and other large vehicles beginning in the late 1990s. Last year, privately held ISE did about $19 million in revenues. It has about 65 employees.

“We intend to use these funds to advance the technology and bring fuel cell vehicles one giant step closer to commercialization,” said David Mazaika, president and chief executive officer of ISE.
