S.D. Foundation Feeds Funds to Foster Education

The San Diego Women’s Foundation has awarded grants to the Community Partners in Education. The grants totaled $232,000 and were given to the Barrio Logan College Institute, which received $40,000; Elementary Institute of Science, which received $30,000; High-Tech High Foundation, which received $50,000; International Rescue Committee, which received $25,000; Los Penasquitos Elementary School, which received $46,000; and the San Diego Science Alliance, which received $41,000. The mission of the San Diego Women’s Foundation is to educate and inspire women to engage in significant and sustainable philanthropy in the San Diego region.

The International Relief Teams’ construction volunteers stationed in Mississippi provided roofing, drywall, framing and electrical services to repair eight homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The projects were recently completed by the team of 18 workers, 11 of whom are from San Diego, including Pete Dudley, Louise Ortega, Stephen Perkins, Eric Moore, Bob Halliday, Bob Cizek, Larry Michel, Jim Hernandez, Tom Sprague, Danny Sherlock and Larry Saunders.

Leap Wireless International Inc. has donated $1 million to the Children’s Museum/Museo de los Ninos San Diego, the largest corporate donation received by the museum. The money will be granted to the museum throughout the next four years. Leap’s contribution supports education in the arts for all children. A portion will be used to provide 45,000 or more free admissions to deserving children.

Darlyn and Chuck Davenport have spent almost every day of the last four years volunteering at Windmill thrift store to help raise funds for the nonprofit agencies Vista Hill and Senior Community Centers. The Davenports spend 40 hours a week volunteering at the store to help sort merchandise, price items and run the cash register. The couple became involved when the thrift shop was on the brink of closing. They approached Senior Community Centers and Vista Hill with the idea of partnering with the shop to keep it from closing. In recent years, the store has raised more than $36,000 annually for the programs and services that Vista Hill and Senior Community Centers provide.

Sycuan Resort & Casino and Science Applications International Corp. each had sponsorships of $25,000 for the Mama’s Day event benefiting Mama’s Kitchen. The event raised an additional $177,000, which will go toward the organization’s funds for preparing and delivering food to people who are affected by AIDS or other critical illnesses.

The Grossmont Healthcare District board of directors voted to grant $10,000 to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Pacific South Coast chapter, for its Grant Me Independence program. The grant is expected to help 50 low-income families in East County by providing assistance with the cost of public transportation, durable medical equipment and home modification items.

More than 1,000 attended the Zoological Society of San Diego’s gala Rendezvous in the Zoo. The event netted around $500,000 and proceeds will benefit the new elephant habitat at the San Diego Zoo.

Mari and Todd Gutschow have made a $1 million endowment gift to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. The gift is in the form of a charitable remainder trust, for which they have now irrevocably designated the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego as the beneficiary. “We want this gift to help ensure that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego will be able to continue to help future generations of children long after Mari and I are gone,” Todd Gutschow said.

Jean Hahn and Jack Hardy were honorary chairpeople and celebration sponsors of Mingei International Museum’s 28th anniversary event. The affair netted $117,000, which will be used to fund exhibition programs at the museum.
