Group Is Changing Name to Vistage

Correction:

In a story in the April 3 edition of the San Diego Business Journal, it was reported that Vistage International, a San Diego organization that helps chief executive officers become better at their jobs, is a nonprofit group. In fact, it is a for-profit organization. It also has chapters in 15 countries, not 16. The Business Journal regrets the errors.

TEC International, a San Diego-based association that helps CEOs and other executives become better at their jobs, is changing its name to Vistage International.

The organization that was formerly known as the The Executive Committee found itself constantly being mistaken for a high-tech group, said spokesman Tony Vignieri.

In national interviews, the organization’s name always had to be explained what it was not, rather than what it was, and so the organization decided to change the name.

Vistage was selected because it’s a combination of vista and advantage. A vista provides the advantage of seeing things more clearly from a higher ground , having a fresher perspective, a broader outlook and an improved line of sight, the organization said.

The new name becomes effective April 4, and includes a newly designed logo.

Vistage Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rafael Pastor said the group’s services are referred to as “Vistage Advantage” because they give business leaders fresh perspectives and practical solutions to today’s pressing business challenges.

“Members can become better leaders, who make better decisions and achieve better results. As we build on our rich heritage by renaming and expanding our company, we are at the cutting edge of traditional,” Pastor said.

Vistage was founded in Wisconsin in 1957, but moved to San Diego in 1978. It has some 12,000 members in 15 countries. In San Diego, there are about 366 member companies.

Its primary purpose is helping the development of chief executives and other managers through interaction with their peers. Members can join one of four programs depending on their position or the size of their company.

The groups are for CEOs and presidents; key executives, generally defined as vice presidents; trusted advisers, for professional service providers with executive clientele; and a small-business program for executives of companies with sales between $1 million to $5 million, and fewer than 25 employees.

Under the guidance of skilled facilitators, up to 16 members (none of whom come from the same industry) meet monthly, ask questions about one another’s businesses, offer solutions, and hold one another accountable, the organization said. The cost for a member in the CEO program is $995 per month.

In San Diego, the largest group of executives, or 39 percent, come from the services sector. Vistage’s next largest groups are from the financial services, real estate and insurance industries. The remainder belongs to the miscellaneous category, Vignieri said.
