Sempra Pledges $600K in Relief Effort

As private and public organizations and businesses rally to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina, San Diego-based Sempra Energy’s employees have pledged up to $600,000 toward disaster relief assistance in the wake of the devastation affecting the Gulf Coast. The announcement was made on Sept. 6.

In addition to the monetary pledge, the corporation’s San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Gas Co. utility subsidiaries have offered electric recovery help and earthmoving equipment to assist in the cleanup and restoration of power.

“We are pleased to lend a hand to the victims of this catastrophe in the Gulf Coast region,” said Stephen L. Baum, the chairman and chief executive officer of Sempra Energy. “We hope that our assistance will accelerate their recovery efforts from this terrible tragedy as they strive to rebuild their lives and their cities.”

Sempra Energy, traded on the New York Stock Exchange as SRE, is a Fortune 500 energy services holding company with 2004 revenues of $9.4 billion. Its companies employ 13,000 people.

Molly Cartmill, the firm’s director of community relations, said that in 2004, when there were no major disasters in the United States, Sempra Energy’s corporate giving totaled about $9.8 million.
