Private Sector Beckons Port Official

Kevin Arner has resigned his position as the director of maritime trade development for the San Diego Unified Port District’s Maritime Division to accept a job as Western regional sales director for Oakland-based Matson Navigation Co.’s new China service.

Arner, a native San Diegan who started his job at the Port District in June 2002 when the agency began to strengthen its focus on cargo trade and maritime industries, said he wasn’t looking for a new job. He was recruited for the position.

Matson Navigation is one of the oldest U.S. flagged steamship lines, which traditionally served ports in Hawaii and Guam before adding its new China route. It is a subsidiary of the Hawaii-based real estate, ocean transportation and food products conglomerate Alexander & Baldwin Inc.

Arner’s resignation takes effect Nov. 18. He starts his new job Nov. 21.
