Training Program Targets Evacuees

Manpower San Diego said it formed an alliance with the San Diego Workforce Partnership, the regional job-training agency, to implement and manage a training program for call center and customer service operators aimed at helping Hurricane Katrina evacuees living in the area.

The training program is funded from a $152,000 grant to the Workforce Partnership from the state’s Employment Development Department, and is matched by Manpower in recruiting, training and outreach services, Manpower said.

The program’s goal is to place 1,000 trained clients in local call centers or customer service jobs that pay up to $13 an hour. The program is offered to both victims of Hurricane Katrina and unemployed county residents. The classes are available at computer labs at the Workforce Partnership’s City Heights offices.

The training program, which began in late October, will encompass 60 hours during a two-week period, Manpower said.
