BAE May Become Bigger San Diego Player

San Diego’s sixth-largest defense employer is poised to get bigger.

Great Britain-based BAE Systems announced March 7 that it plans to acquire Arlington, Va.-based United Defense Industries Inc. for roughly $4 billion.

United Defense owns Southwest Marine, a San Diego company with 1,300 employees. The shipyard is the ninth-largest defense employer in the county, according to The Lists 2005, published by the San Diego Business Journal.

A Southwest Marine spokeswoman said the company does not expect any changes.

United Defense’s Armament Systems Division maintains an office in National City with comparatively few employees.

BAE already has more than 1,500 employees in San Diego. One big project for its local office is developing technology that helps people make better sense of satellite images.
