HP Beefs Up Printer Technology

Hewlett-Packard Co. has introduced what it calls “market-changing technology” that allows inkjet printers to work faster, and cuts costs at the manufacturing plant. The company unveiled new products using this technology on July 11 in New York.

“This technology is the next step in our business transformation the master key that unlocks new market opportunities and further growth in our printer business,” said Vyomesh Joshi, the San Diego-based executive in charge of the Imaging and Printing Group. The HP business unit employed 2,100 people in Rancho Bernardo as of June.

Key to the technology is a manufacturing process that makes print head components as a single unit. Previously, the different layers of the print heads had to be welded together.

HP said it spent $1.4 billion in the five-year technology initiative. The initiative’s name, Big Bang 2005, takes its name from an earlier printer development initiative headed by Joshi.
