Southwestern Plays Host to Hispanic Business Fair

Carlsbad Mall Hopes To Raise Big Bucks for Charity

Southwestern College will host a free business conference geared to Spanish-speaking business owners next week.

The all-day Hispanic Business Fair will be held Nov. 12 at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. Attendees can learn about record-keeping, taxes, business planning, resources available for small businesses and more , all in Spanish.

Sponsors for the business fair include the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Small Business Administration, State Board of Equalization, the Employment Development Department, California Franchise Tax Board, the Social Security Administration and others.

Shopping For Charity: Just in time for the holiday season, Carlsbad Company Stores is holding a special promotion offering customers a chance to shop and raise money for seven local charities Nov. 9.

The 11th annual Shopping Extravaganza is a day of special shopping with entertainment, complimentary baggage check, a raffle with more than $20,000 in prizes and more.

Shoppers must first buy tickets in order to participate. If all 2,500 tickets sell, it will raise $90,000, said Anita Boeker, a spokeswoman for the mall.

Proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society, Casa de Amparo, Children’s Hospital, Dress for Success, Girls Incorporated, Kids Are Worth A Million and the Rancho Coastal Humane Society. In addition to the money raised through ticket sales, Carlsbad Company Stores hopes to raise additional funds with the raffle, Boeker said.

Tree-mendous Display: And speaking of Carlsbad Company Stores, the shopping center took delivery of an 87-foot white fir Oct. 30. The tree will be set up for the center’s tree lighting show Nov. 23.

Boeker says the center’s massive evergreen is among the largest fresh-cut holiday trees in the world. It’s expected to top the holiday trees at Disneyland, Rockefeller Center and at the White House.

The Edge, And How To Get It: A local non-profit think tank has set up an informative seminar for small business owners looking to set themselves apart from the competition.

“The Competitive Edge: How Successful Entrepreneurs Set Themselves Apart,” scheduled for Nov. 12, is sponsored by the Beyster Institute. Speakers include Stanley Crooke, founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Matthew Lehrer, president of San Marcos-based Teamwork Athletic Apparel; and Ned Lester, president, chief executive officer and chairman of Maxim Systems.

Women In Business, Pt. I: Women business owners will have a chance to learn about procurement opportunities with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

Bobbi Becker, business outreach program manager for MWD, will speak at a meeting of the local chapter of the National Association of Woman Business Owners. Becker heads an aggressive business outreach program, targeting Southern California small businesses.

Other outreach coordinators from the corporate world and government agencies are also invited to attend the Nov. 8 lunch meeting, said Carolyn Morrow, NAWBO spokeswoman.

Women in Business, Pt. II: The Professional Women’s Roundtable is looking to open a new chapter in North County.

PWR, a nonprofit group, is an affiliate of the National Association of Female Executives, which offers networking and mentoring opportunities for women throughout Southern California. Monthly meetings also feature guest speakers.
