Business Journal Staff Garners 12 SPJ Awards

Several staff members of the San Diego Business Journal received honors at the Society of Professional Journalists San Diego Chapter’s annual awards on June 6.

Business Journal Managing Editor Rick Bell was awarded Best of Show in the nondaily newspaper entries for his opinion/column entry. Bell also received first place in the opinion/column category, and also an honorable mention in the Sept. 11-related story category for “Trying to Find the Bottom Line Here.”

Reporter Lee Zion won a first-place award in the contest’s nondaily news story category for his new story “Documents, Handwritten Notes Led to Energy Suits.” Zion also received an honorable mention for feature writing.

Writer Mandy Jackson took home a first-place honor for her Sept. 11-related story, “Impact on Trade Still Uncertain.” The judges awarded senior staff writer Mike Allen’s enterprise story, “Mysterious Name, but 257.Com’s Success is Clear,” first-place in the business story category. Allen also received first-place in the political/government/legal story category .

High-tech reporter Brad Graves received second place in the business story category. Tourism and marketing writer Tanya Rodrigues received an honorable mention in the same category.

Former Business Journal reporter Denise Ward received two first-place honors for sports and education reporting.
