Siedsma Toth Brown Webb Rodrigues Allen

San Diego Business Journal staff writers collectively won 12 awards in the San Diego Press Club’s 26th annual journalism competition.

Overall, more than 241 awards in 93 categories were presented to broadcast and print media at the Town & Country Hotel in Mission Valley on Oct. 19.

The Business Journal has been presented with a total of 157 regional and local awards since 1992.

Publisher Ted Owen said the recent round of awards signifies once again that, “without question, the Business Journal is the region’s leading publisher of business and finance news and features.”

“This paper has been extremely fortunate to recruit and hire the finest staff in the region,” Owen said. “Top-notch professionals from a variety of backgrounds have banded together to provide diverse and interesting coverage of an economy that is moving at a record-setting pace. It is a pleasure to come to the office everyday and watch this superstar team at work.”

Marion Webb won a first-place award in the nondaily category for series writing, for her series on the state’s new needle stick law, as well as a second place for science and environmental reporting.

Simone Toth won first place in nondailies for science and environmental reporting for a story on home water recycling technology, and a second place for news stories.

Mike Allen took first place in nondailies for criminal justice and legal affairs reporting for his story on a proposed border crossing law that would have created major traffic problems at the ports of entries. He also won a second place in education writing.

Andrea Siedsma won a second-place award in the nondaily competition in the political and government reporting category for a story on oil tanker laws, and a second place in news stories.

Siedsma also won an honorable mention for feature writing, and an honorable mention in the open competition, where she was competing against the San Diego Union-Tribune, the North County Times, the San Diego Daily Transcript, and local magazines.

Tanya Rodrigues won a second place in news stories for a story on the effects of commission cuts on travel agencies, and an honorable mention in business and financial writing.

Julie Brown won a second place in nondailies for business and financial writing.
